Each option felt like a compromise, putting immense pressure on me to make informed decisions with little to no guidance.

Fueled by my own challenges, I co-founded ByHeart with a passionate vision of reshaping the landscape of infant nutrition. Our goal was not merely to develop another formula; it was about reimagining how formulas are made, emphasizing transparency and quality. We embarked on a mission to collaborate with leading breast milk scientists to craft a product that closely mimics the benefits of breast milk. This meant investing in our own manufacturing facilities to ensure complete control over production processes, a move that was neither easy nor conventional in an industry dominated by just a handful of players.

The formula shortage in early 2022 highlighted just how fragile the supply chain is. When a major manufacturer faced a recall, it exposed flaws within an oligopoly that had long monopolized the market. Suddenly, parents found themselves desperate for nutrition for their babies, bringing attention to the unsustainable nature of an industry reliant on too few providers. At ByHeart, we aimed not only to innovate but also to introduce more options into the market, thereby fortifying the supply chain and fostering competition. The earlier reliance on just a couple of manufacturers for infant formula was alarming, and the events of that year underscored the need for robust alternatives that parents could trust.

Embracing Groundbreaking Research to Formulate Change

We are currently living in a golden era of understanding when it comes to the complexities of breast milk. As researchers unveil new insights about its composition, it becomes increasingly clear that much of this knowledge has yet to permeate commercial formulas. This is partly due to the exhaustive timelines and costs associated with clinical trials and regulatory approvals. As a result, many brands default to established recipes rooted in outdated science, leaving us wondering if today’s infants deserve better than formulas shaped by stale data.

ByHeart was distinguished by running the largest clinical trial initiated by a new infant formula brand in a quarter-century. What set us apart was our commitment to directly compare our formula to breast milk, an audacious step that exemplified our aim to innovate based on contemporary research rather than historical norms. It’s disheartening that many brands don’t prioritize this critical aspect when parents are bombarded with choices regarding infant nutrition.

It’s startling to learn that half of all formula switches stem from supposed digestive issues, a phenomenon that directly correlates with how formulas are designed. Breast milk is composed of both whole and partially broken-down proteins, facilitating optimal digestion. In contrast, some formula brands rely solely on broken-down proteins, which may overlook the benefits that whole proteins bring, such as immune support and nutrient absorption. Parents should not have to choose between digestibility and nutritional density—these should coexist harmoniously in any infant formula.
